It measures 17m x 4m (55ft x 13ft) with its walls a mix of original stone and white plaster. The floor is oak and three huge windows provide wonderful light with views to the east and south over the valley.
Two-thirds of the room is double height to the roof establishing a wonderful sense of scale and space. The remaining third is lower ceilinged and incorporates the main design feature – a rise and fall flooring system: three curved platforms that can be raised and lowered at will.
When it is up, the platforms are flush with the first floor allowing the whole of the ground floor to be used as one large space. In this position the barn is ideal for classes, workshops and rehearsals.
When it is down, the platforms are each lowered to a new level. Staggered seating is thus created that transforms the space into an auditorium. In this position the barn becomes a venue for performances, presentations, screenings and talks.
The barn has been fully equipped for audio-visual work with a digital projector, CD/DVD player, Quad speakers and cinema type screen. Your computers can access this system and there is wireless broadband. There is an upright piano and the whole barn benefits from underfloor heating.
A small kitchen is hidden in one wall of the barn so that it’s very easy to break for coffee. There is also a shower and WC built into the rockface. The separate utility room is the place to wash off your dirty brushes.
